Anyone who has read a Eugene O'Neill play knows that the Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright really cared about his stage directions - from the extensive descriptions of the movements, appearances and personalities of his characters to the vivid settings. But often these stage directions are left on the page and not fully realized or heard in an O'Neill production. Until Now.The New York Neo-Futurists have released Eugene O’Neill’s stage directions from their dissertation prison and transformed them into rip-roaring physical comedy in The Complete & Condensed Stage Directions of Eugene O’Neill, Volume 1: Early Plays/Lost Plays! This special presentation will be featured as part of the Eugene O'Neill Festival at Arena Stage in the Arlene and Robert Kogod Cradle from Thursday, April 19 - Sunday, April 22. Beyond the O’Neill festival at Arena, Eugene is popping up all around the District!
UrbanArias will be performing the one-act opera, Before Breakfast, based on Eugene O’Neill’s play of the same name as part of their Booze and Cigarettes Festival! Here’s their description:
Before Breakfast
A lonely alcoholic addresses her off-stage husband while she prepares breakfast, and reveals the dreams she envisioned for her life, as well as the disappointments that ultimately filled it. Charlotte wanted to be a dancer, like her mother; her husband, a poet from a wealthy family, literally swept her off her feet at a dance marathon, and promised her the moon. Unfortunately, things turned out very differently. Based on a play by Eugene O’Neill, this 40-minute piece is a shocker! UrbanArias’ production marks the triumphant return of Caroline Worra, whose stunning portrayal of Alyce Thompson in Glory Denied was a highlight of our 2011 Festival. This piece is not suited for young children.
Remaining performances are April 18 at 8 p.m., April 20 at 8 p.m. and April 22 at 2 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre at Artisphere in Arlington, VA (near the Rosslyn metro.)
