Set in concrete

If you’ve driven down Maine Avenue past Arena Stage over the past few days, you may have noticed a pile of rubble splayed out behind our building. No, the building isn’t falling apart – it’s actually part of the set design for our upcoming production of  9 Parts of Desire. The show is set in a bombed-out mosque in Iraq, so our production staff trucked in 20 cubic yards of broken concrete (courtesy of Davis Construction Co. from one of their sites) to help create this look on stage. Who knew concrete could be so artful?
